Should You Choose To Self-Learn Or Take Up A Japanese Class?

Last updated on May 26, 2026 in Japaneseexplorer

Is it possible to self-learn Japanese? Of course. You can definitely teach Japanese to yourself.

Picking up a new language is just like any skill that you can teach yourself. This is especially true with the invention of the internet, which allows you to find various resources available online, often free. Hence, this can help you learn Japanese without really taking any formal class.

However, at the same time, learning a new language, especially one that’s notoriously difficult like Japanese, is not easy.

Teaching yourself Japanese, or any language takes a lot of time, effort, and discipline. Plus, it’s just not for everybody.

So, which is better?

Self-learning vs taking a class

There’s a certain appeal to learning Japanese on your own.

For starters, you have control over your time and just how much you learn. You can learn many words very fast on your own and at your own pace or you can also take it slowly, depending on your preferences.

However, without any professional guidance, no one is really there to correct you or check if what you’re doing is wrong. Not to mention, unlike when you take Japanese language lessons in Singapore, there’s relatively little human interaction involved.

Therefore, this means that you won’t know what make mistakes you made and learn from them, which is a vital part of the language acquisition process.

This is why taking Japanese courses Singapore, or a class, is significantly better than learning on your own.

While it is definitely possible to try and learn Japanese by yourself, it is not advisable. The lack of guidance from a professional and accredited teacher means that your learning is flawed, which can hurt you a lot. Also, if you don’t take a class, there’s really no way for you to get certified, which means that you have no proof of your fluency in the language.

Of course, there’s really no stopping you from trying to learn Japanese on your own. At the very least, you’ll find out for yourself just how difficult it is. By then, you can try and find Japanese language lessons in your area or online to get additional help once you start struggling.

If you don’t have a lot of time to spare, don’t worry. It is still possible to learn Japanese without devoting as much time as you’d think.

For example, you can hire private tutors to help you learn Japanese during your office breaks or the weekends. The best part about this option is that you can learn straight from the comfort of your own home or your desk. With many online accredited tutors these days, they would be more than willing to accommodate to your schedule and learning style, making sure that you learn Japanese the right way.

However, it’s still preferable to take a class. Not only do you get proper instruction and guidance, but you’re also exposed to the language through your classmates. Hence, you will naturally gain actual conversational experience.
